LETTER TO PEN CLUB INTERNATIONAL
(5:AM 20 Oct 2008)
I am Hoang Hung, a poet, translator, free-lance writer (former senior writer of the Lao Dong News, a first-rank daily in Vietnam), who had chance to take part in the Pen’s Asian-Pacific Conference Hongkong 2007. I write to ask you for support to Nguyen Viet Chien, a famous journalist and poet in Vietnam who just was sentenced 2 years of jail from a very unfair trial in Hanoi because of his published writings on a scandal of corruption involving higher officials. The sentence has stirred bad opinion of the whole society about the freedom of the press and the will for repressing corruption in the country (the details of that has been posted in the website of Reporters Sans Frontiere): http://www.rsf.org/article.php3?id_article=28884
I urgently insist you call for a revision of an upper court that must repeal the above sentence and free Nguyen Viet Chien.
